Our choices seal our fate. Hannah Reed is about to learn just how important one little decision can be.
Hannah’s plans for a nice, quiet senior year of high school are rapidly disintegrating. It all starts when she innocently bursts in on Ethan Flynn in the change room of the clothing store where she works. Ethan’s presence in Hannah’s world is subtle but constant, and when he saves her life, they become linked by the workings of an ancient society and Ethan’s sworn duty to protect Hannah. Working together to figure out what destiny wants with Hannah, the two of them stumble on a baffling mystery that leaves even Ethan questioning what is in store for her future. With Ethan’s help, Hannah learns there is far more to this life, to her life, than she ever realized. As they attempt to untangle Hannah’s unique past and emerging abilities, an unknown danger from Ethan’s past looms ever closer. While racing to put together the pieces of the puzzle before it’s too late, Hannah wrestles with the idea that she is anything but average, and that perhaps she is also more to Ethan than just a job.

Hleo eBook Rebecca Weller Reviews
Although not a genre I'd normally gravitate towards this is a really good YA series that feels like movie waiting to happen. The story is very well laid out, and the pace is excellent. Characters are relatable and likeable and we're left at the end feeling the journey is worth continuing. The only areas that tripped me up were too much exposition, both in dialogue and story, that if trimmed would drive the story forward even better. Related, I'd like to have seen some moments mentioned in dialogue, as visiting past events would have added some extra layers to the relationships. The good news is that since there's more to come, I'm hoping we can get out of town so to speak.
Although not my typical genre, Hleo is a thoroughly enjoyable book. I particularly enjoyed Hannah's inner thoughts. So typically a teenager. I felt the interaction between the characters was good, however, I felt the "sympathy date" for Ryan was a little harsh. I really like the action and tension in the library scene. Very well written. I was on the edge of my seat. Since I am not familiar with this genre, it would have been helpful to have a phonetic pronunciation of Hleo. I stumbled over it all through the book which was a little frustrating. Finally is just read it as LEO. That being said, I am looking forward to more adventures with Hannah and Ethan.
Y/A fantasy is not my typical genre but Hleo sounded interesting. I must say, that I was pulled in right away and thoroughly enjoyed this story. The typical high school girl-boy relationships, jealousies, etc. were very realistic based on my own children, nieces, nephews and students. Well developed characters and plot. I wondered about Hannah's father, however. Once he left for England, there seemed to be no contact between him and Hannah. His assistant was from the dark side which left me wondering if he was in danger. Do I sense a sequel coming up? As a mystery writer, I ask many questions. I would definitely be interested in reading a sequel to Hleo.
(I received a digital copy of this book for free. Thanks to author Rebecca Weller.)
This was a YA paranormal/fantasy story with a touch of romance.
Hannah was an interesting character, and I liked Ethan also, even if they were a little bit clueless when it came to their love lives. I actually felt quite sorry for Ryan though as it seemed like nobody wanted to go out with him.
The storyline in this was about Hannah meeting Ethan and starting a friendship with him, and slowly discovering that he was hiding some massive secrets from her. We got a bit of action, some unusual happenings, and a bit of romance too, and I liked the little twists we got thrown towards the end.
The ending to this was pretty good, and it will be interesting to see where the story goes from here.

With a fascinating premise set up for multiple books, Hleo is a good story for plot-driven readers. In particular, I enjoyed some of the quotes like this one on page 135 “I almost threw the file into the trash can, leaving the whole matter settled at The Sandwich Shop.” Find it and enjoy! What was difficult for me as a reader was the slow start, the dialogues, and the “telling.” I would love to see this story take advantage of the dialogue to show more character development. Some of it, to me, seemed difficult to believe. Building scenes with more balance in showing rather than telling may also capture readers’ attentions earlier on in the book to bring them along for the ride to the good stuff later on in the story. I think with some more beats built into the dialogue, the dialogue could flow in more of a realistic way while showing more personality in the main characters at the same time. Two birds with one stone! In my opinion, this story needs a bit more craft work, but overall, this story has an abundance of potential!
Pretty great writing for a first novel!! Good job Jen!!!
Loved it!! It was very well written and kept me in suspense all the way through. I didn't want it to end. I can wait for the next book in the series to see what happens to Ethan and Hannah. Great job!!
